Initiated by playwright and activist Eve Ensler (of The Vagina Monologues fame), and her organization V-Day, One Billion Rising is a global campaign to end violence against women. The ‘one billion’ refers to the UN statistics that one in three women (amounting to one billion of the global female population) will be raped or beaten.

It started in 2012 as part of the V-Day movement and culminated in the biggest ever mass global action to end violence against women with tens of thousands of events held in more than 190 countries. On February 14, 2013, one billion people in 207 countries rose and danced to demand an end to violence against women and girls.

One Billion Rising calls on women survivors of violence and those who love them to gather safely outside places where they are entitled to justice, such as courthouses, police stations and government offices, and break the silence and release their stories through art, dance, marches, ritual, song, spoken word, testimonies and whatever way feels right.

Whether you’re a woman or a man, you can join the global campaign with One Billion Rising Indonesia
