In 2014 graphic designer Andri Nirmala conducted a research for her dissertation project at the red-light district Gang Dolly in Surabaya, East Java. The result was an illustrated book based on a series of articles by Tempo Magazine. Though brief, her research took her to meet various people whose lives depended on the sex industry that once thrived in the area. This is the first of “Dolly: A Graphic Journal on a Red-Light District” which chronicles her experience there.
