A new online booklet entitled “Self Respect Project” aims to raise awareness about self-respect and healthy relationship among young Indonesian women. The free e-booklet was written by a social initiative, HelpNona, which focuses on young women’s empowerment issues. The initiative was founded by Nike Nadia, a former inquiry officer in the National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas perempuan), and it stands with a motto “Speak Up and Be Brave” (Bertutur dan Berani).

The booklet tackles a wide-range of pivotal topics are tackled. The first article addresses the importance to understand “the power trio”: self-esteem, self-worth and self-respect. It explains that we can start to learn about the power trio by questioning how we perceive ourselves and how we deal with our own strengths and weaknesses. Another topic addressed in the booklet is the so-called “Cinderella complex” – an internalized belief that one day a woman’s life will be saved by a prince charming on a white horse. The article encourages women to empower themselves and to be self-reliant for the most part.

The booklet also provides a perspective about marriage at a young age. It encourages women to consider some important aspects and dimensions before getting married, such as biological consideration, emotional stability, huge responsibilities, as well as personal education and economic capability.

One article gives insights about the advantages of being single. Many millennials value their self-worth based on whether they are in a relationship or not, and it is usually caused by social pressure. The article shows the good sides of not being in a relationship, among them the fact that we can expand our circles more freely and that we have more time to bond with our own family. Also, being single means we can make important decisions more easily, and also we will be more focus on our own personal development and our own career.
