Delhi-based photographer Rahul Saharan recently took several women to become the models of his project and the results are heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

The women are survivors of acid attacks, the incomprehensible, misogynistic crime against humanity that, unfortunately, is still rampant in India and Pakistan.

Despite their imperfections, however, the women look happy and shine in the photographs, projecting courage, hope and confidence, refusing to have their spirits dampened by such tragic circumstances.

Laxmi, Ritu, Sonam and Chanchal posed prettily in the beautiful clothes created by fashion designer, Rupa, who also appears in the photo project and whose devastating life story can be seen in the video below.

“In spite [sic] of taking professional models, we took these beautiful girls as models, because they define beauty, courage, positivity. There is so much to beauty and these girls are strong enough to show that,” wrote Rahul Saharan on his Facebook page.

“I dedicate this shoot to every woman on earth. All of you are beautiful from skinny to healthy, dark to fair, tall to short, ebony to porcelain-skinned; the quirky, clumsy, shy, outgoing and all in between, so ladies live your life stay happy, no matter who says what, you are beautiful believe in it. Have courage, fight back, if you stand, many will follow you….Rise and shine.”
